to help you limit and reduce the impact of osteoporosis
on your life. Built on the Medical Center's expertise in rehabilitation
and women's health, this program will help you:
- evaluate your
risk for developing osteoporosis
- prevent further bone loss and
increase bone mass
- build muscle strength and flexibility
- improve your posture
- reduce your risk for falls
- increase your knowledge of healthy dietary
choices
- develop an individualized plan to reduce your risks
Individualized Program
This quarterly six-week program meets at CompRehab Plaza
at 131 Miller Street. Each participant works with a Certified Strength and
Conditioning Specialist
(CSCS) to develop an individualized plan to promote the retention of bone density.
On
Monday and Thursday of each week, participants follow their individualized
exercise program that includes five types of exercise: weight bearing,
aerobic,
muscle strengthening, flexibility, and balance activities. The exercise program
is now available at two times:
- Days – Monday & Thursday from 12 pm to
2 pm
- Evenings – Monday
& Thursday from 5 pm to 7 pm
Each Wednesday health
educators discuss the latest information related to osteoporosis. Topics include
nutrition, pain management, medication options and proper lifting
techniques. The education session is for five weeks beginning the second week
on Wednesdays from 12:00 to 1:00 pm. A lite lunch is served.
At the end of the
six-week period, participants are given two options. They may either progress
to a home or gym-based exercise program or continue in an onsite
maintenance program with minimal supervision by a CSCS.
